Who are we?

Samen Tegen Racisme aims to ensure that Amsterdam residents experience less discrimination and racism and that residents of Amsterdam are empowered to stand up for themselves and for others. The coalition has a grassroots (bottom-up) approach. It works towards an Amsterdam movement that is proactive against racism and discrimination. The alliance consists of Committee March 21, Collective against Islamophobia and Discrimination, Fite Qlub, Pan Asian Collective, Amsterdam City Rights and Pakhuis de Zwijger. Grassroots Fund: your idea part of Samen Tegen Racisme

The grassroots fund is intended for everyone with a good idea against racism and discrimination in Amsterdam. This can be interpreted broadly: the initiative may be neighbourhood or district level or for a specific target group at a school or in a public or cultural space. Your proposal can vary from a workshop, network meeting, dialogue, art program, panel discussion, campaign, lecture to a film screening. It can be multi-interdisciplinary and vary in form and content. Are you applying as an individual? Then we ask you to collaborate with at least two others.

Who can participate?

Together against Racisme is a platform for al grassroots initiatives en organisations that deal with racism and discrimination. Input from active individuals are also welcomed.

How much can I request and how do I apply?

The grassroots fund can fund initiatives between €1500 and a maximum of €2500. Do we choose your idea? Then we will contact you about the budget and obligations regarding reporting. You can submit ideas for the program of Samen Tegen Racisme throughout the year via the grassroots fund contact form online or download the word file and send the completed form to kjelld@dezwijger.nl. Please try to fill in this form as completely as possible to assess all ideas properly. Please note that because the fund is continuous, the fund may run out. We, therefore, recommend that you act quickly!

About the selection of the Grassroots Fund

We will treat all applications with care and assess them on content, form, possible impact and feasibility. Unfortunately, we cannot facilitate all ideas due to time and space constraints. We may refine some program proposals in consultation or, where possible, suggest collaborations with other organizations if there is overlap.

Goals of the Together Against Racism coalition

The application for the Grassroots Fund must contribute to at least one of the following objectives:

Criteria and obligations

The alliance Samen Tegen Racisme supports five to ten grassroots organizations and initiatives with the grassroots fund every year. Samen Tegen Racisme prefers to support initiatives for which this fund is indispensable if they want to realize their plans. The grassroots fund is intended for small initiatives or organizations that work against racism and discrimination in Amsterdam. Below you can read what an application must meet and what obligations exist during and after the activity.

What requirements must my application meet?

  • The application was submitted either by an Amsterdam grassroots* organization or by an Amsterdam interest group or initiative consisting of at least three individuals.
  • A grassroots organization is an organization that does not receive structural subsidies from a government agency, alliance or other funds.
  • The submitted plan is in line with at least one of the five goals of the Samen Tegen Racisme coalition.
  • Applicants can show that they are in contact and have experience with their target group. Please explain this clearly in the application.
  • The submitted plan will take place in Amsterdam.
  • The applicants do not employ permanent people. They are allowed to work with volunteers.
  • Applicants submit a budget with an explanation of how you will spend your money.

What must my budget meet?

  • The money is mainly intended for expenses that are necessary to realize the submitted plan. A maximum of 30% of the total amount may go to the organization and staff (volunteer fees, etc.). In addition, there is 70% for program costs (content, (promotional) material, speakers, travel costs, location costs, etc.).
  • In the budget, the applicant shares any other financial contributions it receives for the activity. This is a maximum of € 5000 and is not structural, the total budget must be below €8500 (including the grassroots fund).

What other obligations do I have to meet?

    • The organizers keep records of expenses (receipts, keep invoices).
    • A brief report on how the event contributed to the objective(s) should be submitted. This can be done via an evaluation form that we send beforehand.
    • Sending pictures or other forms of documentation would be appreciated, such as mentions in media outlets.
    • The activity must not be a lobby activity*.

Explanation of lobbying activities:

Funds may not be used to fund political activities, such as lobbies or election debates. Also, the funds are not used to take a political position political parties. The fund is not intended to influence, for example, councillors or to support and promote specific political parties. It is not the intention that activities are organised purely for councillors and their parties in which they are the only ones included. Of course it is possible that a councillor can be invited for an event.
